What Is Transvaginal Mesh?
Transvaginal mesh is a web-like implant used to hold up weakened or stretched vaginal tissues. Surgeons implant this mesh primarily to correct the weakening tissues caused by pelvic organ prolapse (POP). This uncomfortable condition occurs when pelvic organs, such as the bladder, drop due to weak pelvic muscles. Any woman of any age can experience this condition; however, it occurs most frequently in women after childbirth. Besides childbirth, POP can be caused by repetitive heavy lifting, chronic constipation, chronic cough and poor tissue.
Left untreated, patients may experience pain and pressure in the pelvis and/or the lower back, urinary leaking and/or constipation. The purpose of a transvaginal mesh implant or bladder sling is to treat these uncomfortable symptoms by supporting these organs and keeping them in place. However, product defects in these devices make them prone to breakage, migration and failure, causing serious complications.
What Are Common Transvaginal Mesh Injuries and Complications?

- There is no evidence that transvaginal mesh repair is more effective than traditional non-mesh repair.
- Transvaginal mesh surgery exposes patients to greater risk than traditional non-mesh repair.
