What To Do When You Are in a Trucking Accident

Call our truck accident lawyers to learn more.

If you are involved in an accident with a semi, 18-wheeler, tractor-trailer or other large truck, your first concern should be the safety and physical condition of your passengers and yourself. These accidents are usually very serious and often even fatal. However, if you are conscious and haven’t been whisked away by an ambulance, the following tips can be very helpful on what to do at the scene of the accident.

Contact the Authorities

If you or anyone on the scene is injured, call 911 to report the accident immediately. Explain what has happened and describe any and all injuries as well as you are able. This will allow the 911 operator to send the necessary first responders. If there are no obvious or visible injures, you should still contact law enforcement and remain on the scene until they arrive to document the accident.

Get Witness and Driver Information

When possible, get the name and contact information of the truck driver, his insurance information, and the Department of Transportation Vehicle license number for the trailer and the truck. Get contact information for the drivers of any other vehicles involved in the accident as well. Look for witnesses and obtain their names, numbers and addresses too.

Document the scene

Take pictures of the accident scene, any vehicle damage, skid marks and any other pertinent visible evidence. Write down all observations that you note about road conditions and the weather, the demeanor of the other driver(s) and any statements they make.

See a Medical Professional

Seek medical attention even if you don’t believe you have been injured. Encourage anyone else in your vehicle to do so also. Internal injuries or other issues may not be immediately apparent. There may be various reasons for this, such as shock, your physical condition and the nature of your possible injuries. After you’ve been seen, be sure to follow the medical professional’s recommendations and advice.

Report the Trucking Accident to your Motor Vehicle Insurance Company

Follow your auto insurance company’s policies and procedures for reporting the accident. Don’t make any admissions and don’t sign anything without the counsel of an accident attorney. The insurance adjuster does not “represent” you. He works for the insurance company.
