Keefe Law Firm is investigating alleged claims of serious and sometimes fatal side effects suffered by patients who were prescribed “Low T” drugs for testosterone therapy, or TT.

There is a wide variety of drugs prescribed to assist males who suffer from low testosterone, including but not limited to:

  • ANDROGEL
  • AXIRON
  • ANDRODERM
  • FORTESTA
  • TESTIM
  • TESTOPEL

Recent medical studies suggest testosterone therapies are linked to serious cardiac problems.  One study in the journal PLoS ONE (funded by the National Institutes of Health) concluded: “In older men, and in younger men with pre-existing diagnosed heart disease, the risk of MI following initiation of TT prescription is substantially increased.” In fact, the study found that men 65 and older had double the rate of heart attacks in the months after starting the therapy, as did those younger than 65 with a previous diagnosis of heart disease. Despite these troubling findings, TT prescription therapies have actually increased in recent years.

On January 31, 2014, the Food and Drug Administration did issue a safety alert regarding its investigation into the health risks associated with low testosterone products. The FDA stated:

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is investigating the risk of stroke, heart attack, and death in men taking FDA-approved testosterone products. We have been monitoring this risk and decided to reassess this safety issue based on the recent publication of two separate studies that each suggested an increased risk of cardiovascular events among groups of men prescribed testosterone therapy. We are providing this alert while we continue to evaluate the information from these studies and other available data, and will communicate our final conclusions and recommendations when the evaluation is complete.

However, Public Citizen’s says that the Federal Drug Administration should have already taken action years ago against these possibly dangerous Low T drugs. http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/U/US_TESTOSTERONE_RISKS_FDA_PETITION?SITE=AP&SECTION=HOME&TEMPLATE=DEFAULT

Side effects associated with Low T drug therapies may include:

  • HEART ATTACKS
  • STROKES
  • INCREASED RISK OF DEATH
  • DEEP VEIN THROMBOSIS
  • PULMONARY EMBOLISM

The potential risks identified with these testosterone therapies are troubling because in many cases, patients may not actually require treatment for low testosterone.  Keefe Law Firm is investigating such claims to see if the allegations are true.
